OASISIt may sounds absurd...but won't you concede...even heroes have the right to dream On U.S. Presidential DebateRevisited the U.S. presidential debate tapes - it was inspiring, and even empowering to watch how powerful people like Obama and McCain behaved under stress in such a historical event (although the VP candidates are much more entertaining). Obama went into the debate with a two-digit lead. Strategically, he needed to do three things: 1) strengthen the image that he successfully established - that made Clinton look like a calculating and polarizing policy wonk and McCain an outdated and ignorant warhead - young, energetic, eloquent, intelligent and composed; 2) emphasize the connection between George Bush and McCain and turn the election into a referendum on the Bush doctrines; 3) try to avoid stimulating, if not to reduce, distrust among working-class white male electorate. Effective management of his campaign throughout the electrion process has put him at this vantage point. On McCain's side, after publicly making certain comments he is now probably regretting in his Arizona desert house ("economy is not something that I've understood well, nor do I think it's necessary to", "the fundamentals of our economy is strong"), he first needed to prove that he had the capability to understand and manage complicated economic situations. Secondly, he needed to emphasize the difference between him and Mr Bush. Thirdly, he needed to attack Obama wherever possible in the hope that Obama may falter. However, this is a weapon that should be used very carefully because failing to do so will make him look like a desperate and self-centered politician. Obama did a very good job. When it comes to the content, he focused on the debate questions and important issues, articulated his policy (in bullet points, surprisingly:)) in an easily-understood and consistent fashion, forcefully and concisely rebutted McCain's attacks. Style-wise, he looked into the camera directly and spoke to the audience as if he had already been the president in an assuring manner. He remained polite and humble even when McCain was arrogant and irritating. He demonstrated his ability to reach across the aisle by disagreeing with McCain without being disagreeable. He gave the audience the impression that he could respond calmly under huge pressure, a quality that is essential in such an economic turmoil; he understood the important issues and key priorities very well and was well-informed on his decisions; rather than a selfish power contender, he appeared to be the selfless and charismatic leader. McCain's performance was so poor that it actually surprised me. Instead of directly answering the question, he repeated a few arguments many times no matter what the question was and oftentimes made irrational/emotional comments to boast about his credential and experience and attack Obama's track record and age (which was a fatal mistake I believe). His answers were far from being structured; rather than giving people a clear and holistic view on his policies, he dwelled into trivial details again and again and seemed quite lost sometimes in his own response. He did not enjoy the debate, nor did he respect Obama. And he made no effort hiding his arrogance and impatience - I wish the smirks were his designed strategy rather than due to his incapability to control his emotions. To make things worse, his performance deteriorated significantly from the first debate to the last debate. While I respect McCain for his effort in pushing forward the climate change legislation, his ignorance and arrogance in the debates shocked and disappointed me. For a voter like me, Obama's intellectual and emotional capacity completely overshadowed McCain. However, McCain actually came out as winner in the GOP primary (well Mitt Romney could have a better chance to win if he had not been such a flipflop) - there must be millions of Americans who were still excited and motivated by McCain's style. Not to even mention Sarah Palin! Again, a lesson to remind us how different people can be - a fact that always needs to be remembered in politics. |
